NV Berlucchi, Franciacorta, ‘61 Extra Brut (RT92+) My recent visit with this outstanding bottling was nothing short of impressive and as Champagne has gotten increasingly expensive, my exploration revealed many options that will save those hard earned dollars while still delivering sparkling excellence! The ’61 Extra Brut is one of those top values. It’s a blend of 85% Chardonnay and 15% Pinot Nero (aka Noir) crafted using the Champenois Methode and aged on lees for 2 years prior to its disgorgement of 5 g/l. With a light straw hue and super fine bubbles, the nose wafts up classic notes of smoky brioche, lemon oil, yellow peach and a spark of gunflint minerality. The medium density palate offers generous ripe fruit balanced with fresh acidity and a tasty finish. An exceptional value, with a little shopping you should be able to source it from the mid-$20s to mid-$30s. A bit of cellaring will help this round out and come together, although its drink well now.
