2004 Bodegas y Viñedos Pintia, Toro DO, Pintia (RT94) This is a broad shouldered, large scale bottling that even 21 years post vintage is showing youthful characteristics. With a deep russet-ruby, almost impenetrable hue, the bouquet is equally dark and brooding packed with black berries, black currants, kirsch, hints of oak-laced vanilla, and notes of damp, rain soaked earth. This is a real heavy weight, but the palate is more resolved with seamless ripe fruit, soft acidity and tannins bringing up the finish that ripe and suave, yet maintain their firmness. This is showing quite well with two decades under its belt, but there’s no need to rush opening all your bottles, as it’s got plenty of legs to take it down the road. Crafted by a subsidiary of Vega Sicilia, Pintia is a Toro red that is a classic expression of the appellation, where Tempranillo expresses deep hued, powerful versions of the grape. This wine is harvested by hand, and the grapes are then stored in a cold chamber for 12 hours to preserve the fruit’s freshness. Grapes are then meticulously sorted followed by gentle pressing and a cold maceration for 5 days prior to fermentation in oak casks. Malolactic fermentation takes place in wood and is then aged in a combination of French and American oak for 12 months.
