2001 Mauro Sebaste, Barolo, Monvigliero (RT94) Now 24 years into its life, this was purchased on release and has been living in my cellar since. Its deep russet hue has developed a fully tertiary bouquet with gorgeous notes of black cherry compote, dried violets, bramble berries, hints of terroir-driven dried sous bois and parched earth. With time in the glass hints of brown tobacco, smoke and limestone dust provide a picturesque background. The palate is weightlessly balanced showing refreshing acidity, and mature, soft tannins. This is now at full maturity, I suggest drinking this beauty while its delivering in its full glory. Drink now-2031+ Tasted September 2025
A brief comment about Monvigliero: this wine dates back to the days when Sebaste produced a negoce bottling from what has today become a legendary site. He no longer bottles this wine. I credit today’s legendary status of the Monvigliero cru with Burlotto’s unique expression of this site, far more than the terroir of the site itself. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a spectacular site, but Burlotto’s unique elevage and deft winemaking – full cluster, crushed strictly by foot, long maceration and finally aged for aged 36 months in large cask – as to what sets this site apart and has lifted it reputation. In other words, it is solely due to one bottling.
