1999 Fuglini, Brunello di Montalcino (RT95) The deep russet hued 1999 Fuglini Brunello is packed with tertiarily evolved nuances and bass-thumping notes of black cherry, plum liqueur, dried cranberries, brown tobacco, dark shady forest after rain, licorice and earth dusted sage. The terroir shines through as concise, powerful notes take center stage. The palate is equally dark and enigmatic, displaying the ripeness of the vintage. Vivid acids and suave, ripe tannins bring a magnificent finish to the mouth texture. At age 25 this is utterly gorgeous, like a mysterious sexy woman, it reaches out and caresses every inch of you. A proud and classic Brunello that does the DOCG proud, buy this wine in age-worthy vintages and cellar it for medium to long term. You will be handsomely rewarded. Drink now-2029+ Tasted April 2025

Founded in 1923, Fuligni was an ancient Venetian family who moved to Tuscany in the late 1700’s. the current owner – Maria Flora Fuligni – works closely with her nephew Roberto Fuligni and their esteemed enologist Paolo Vagaggini to produce the estate’s wines. They have 39 acres of vineyards which are located in the hills east of the village of Montalcino, where the soils are galestro marl, sand and gravel. The vineyards are part of a larger estate where alternate agricultural products are planted. Fuglini focuses on an enlightened style of winemaking, one that stylistically lies between staunch traditionalism and polished modernism. Being Brunello di Montalcino, this wine is of course 100% Sangiovesi Grosso, which is handpicked, gently pressed and indigenously fermented with no yeast inoculations. It is first aged for a few months in stainless, then moved to a combination of 30-45 hectoliter Slavonian casks and 500-750 liter Allier tonneaux where it ages for 2-3 years depending on vintage conditions. Finally it is bottled and aged for 6 months at the winery prior to being released into the market. Total production is around 35,000 bottles annually.
