2021 Poggerino, Chianti Classico DOCG (RT94) This is a very impressive vintage for Poggerino’s Chianti Classico, certainly one of the finest ever, as its soaring charged aromatics are bright and fresh with notes of Morello cherry, umami-tinged raspberries, dusty Tuscan spice and a pinch of crushed stones. The fresh fruit dominates and with time in the glass it gains depth and dimension. The palate is highly reflective of the vintage with pure, sparkling fruit, beautiful mineral-acid thrust, and sumptuously ripe tannins. What an outstanding vintage for this wine! Drink 2026-2039 Tasted August 2024 This is a HOT PICK!
Piero Lanza, the brains and impetus behind Poggerino is deeply passionate about Sangiovese, crafting it in both still and sparkling expressions ranging from Rose to Riserva. Like other practicing Organic wineries, Poggerino does not employ use of pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fungicides, but does use minimal sulfur and copper on an as needed basis. They do not use chemical fertilizers and limit their use of fertilizers to composted manure. Their Chianti’s are a pure expression of estate grown Sangiovese, manually harvested and destemmed. The Chianti Classico is crafted from 20-30 year-old vines, and after fermentation and maceration lasting roughly 35 days, is aged for a year in a combination of Slavonian casks and French tonneaux. It spends 8+ months in bottle prior to release.
