2021 Castelli Martinozzi, Rosso di Montalcino DOC (RT92+) As they say in the real estate market, “location, location, location!” At Castelli Martinozzi they have as fine a location as can be found in Montalcino: Santa Restituta, home to not only this winery, but part of the original Castelli Martinozzi estate is also Gaja’s Pieve Santa Restituta winery and Soldera’s Azienda Agricola Case Basse Di Soldera Gianfranco. At Castelli Martinozzi, winemaker Giuseppe Bino crafts Rosso and Brunello – including Riserva – from 12 hectares of vineyard, which are relatively high at 400-480 meters. This 100% Sangiovese is aged for 8-10 months in oak casks, and in some vintages up to a year, followed by a couple months in bottle prior to the release to the market. Showing a deep ruby garnet, notes of ripe black cherry, terroir-driven sous bois, Tuscan spice, underbrush, hints of smoked meat and dried florals make their mark. The palate is sumptuous and layered with gorgeously ripe fruit, the acidity is refreshing while its soaring aromatics bring you back for another sip. This is a masculine Rosso that’s utterly delicious, produced by a traditional, honest winehouse. Drink 2025-2032+ Tasted May 2024
