2010 Castello Monsanto, DOCG Chianti Classico Riserva, Il Poggio (RT97) More recent releases are now labeled “Chianti Classico Gran Selezione”, the new “super Riserva” category. Since the 1962 first vintage it has set a benchmark of long cellaring and is a routine blend of 90% Sangiovese with 10% Canaiolo and Colorino blended in. You would never know this vintage is aged in 500 liter French oak casks, a blend of old and new. The articulation is utterly seamless. At age 11 revealing all of its magnificence through its medium-to-dark ruby hue. This is both stunningly rich and focused, as attention commanding masculine notes of bright red cherry, dusty strawberries, orange peel, hints of cinnamon and spice emerge. The fruit core is so impressive leading to a sumptuous, wonderfully balanced mouthfeel, rich and full figured while maintaining a beautiful, semi-weightless character. This is gob-smacking delicious, one of my perennial favorite Tuscan wines from among the most long aging vintages. Impressive! Drink now-2040+
