1996 Scavino, Barolo, Bric del Fiasc (RT97) With its relatively deep garnet hue, this opens relatively fast, taking a handsome posture and developing in the glass to reveal powerful notes of dried plum, intense rose petals, spice cake, crunchy dry sous bois and menthol with a dusting of chalk on the finish. With time in the glass, its complexity grows. The palate is totally 1996 in style, as the powerful thrust of red fruit shows impeccable balance with refreshing acidity and a tannic finish that is still making its presence known. This has always been a magnificently structured Barolo, but it has truly blossomed in recent years. Will it give more with additional cellaring? The tannins will continue to soften, and more tertiary development may make for a more interesting aromatic profile, but right now it strikes me as an amazingly stunning wine. This will continue to show well for many years to come, and its modern styling, at time of production, has almost entirely faded into the background. Drink now-2041+
