2016 Donnafugatta, Passito di Pantelleria, Ben Rye (RT94) Showing a rather deeply hued appearance, this appassimento-styled masterpiece is large scaled, revealing its sheer heft and impressive scale in its first sips. Not for the faint of heart, notes of dried mandarin orange, tangerine zest, yellow peach compote, lychee and an assorted late Fall cornucopia of dried fruit lead to a palate that is equally decadent, rich and full bodied. There is no lack of residual sugar here, as this bruiser dessert wine shows its magnificence. If there is one thing I could ask for, it’s a bit more acidity to brighten up the massive core of fruit.
