2008 Philipponnat, Extra Brut, Grand Cru, Cuvée 1522 (RT94+) This blend of 58% Pinot Noir, which is sourced from their vineyard at “Le Léon” in Ay, and 42% Chardonnay, which is grown in Mesnil-sur-Oger. 14,664 total bottles were produced, disgorged July 2018 with a dosage of 4.6g/l. It was aged 8 years, some in wood, balance in stainless steel and with no malolactic fermentation, thus preserving the freshness. The bouquet is sublime layered with notes of soft citrus and lemon zest, white melon, fresh brioche, and accents of chalk dust and minerality. Intriguingly light considering it more Pinot Noir than Chardonnay as finely focused, artfully refined details reveal themselves with sophistication. This is all about elegance. The palate is generous yet maintains its focus with finely articulated fruit delivering a round, rich mouthfeel. This is a lovely bottle that should make you smile. Hats to the team at Philipponnat!
