2004 Paitin, Barbaresco, Sori Paitin (RT93) The large scaled 2004 Sori Paitin is a hulk from a highly structured vintage. Deep, dark ruby with a garnet halo, powerful notes emerge of black cherry, spiced plum, goudron, saddle leather and a hint of oak char. The bouquet ebbs and morphs with time. The mouth texture is well balanced and evolved with weightless fruit, vibrant acidity, and firm, but softening tannins. This is now in early tertiary maturity and can be enjoyed in the near term with ample air. But, if you’ve got a nice stash, I suggest waiting a few more years, the additional wait will reward. This bottle was followed over the course of three evenings and held up very well. Drink 2024-2039+
2001 Selvapiana, Chianti Ruffina Riserva, Vigneto Bucerchiale (RT94) This medium ruby/garnet beauty is firing on all cylinders as it moves toward age 20. I’ve always loved this bottling, considering it the very finest Chianti Riserva originating out of Ruffina, and this reminds me why. Captivating aromatic harmony shows notes of mentholated, dusty red bramble berries, Tuscan brush, spice and savory herbs. Showing enormous balance and finesse, the mouthfeel has evolved showing fall red fruits cast in a soft and round persona, lovely acidity, and supple, succulent tannins. A fabulous showing.
